Step 1: Documentation Is Reviewed

Step 2: Goods Are Classified

Step 3: Duties and Taxes Are Calculated 

Customs calculates duties, VAT and other charges based on factors such as the product type, declared value, country of origin, Shipped on Board (SOB), Rate of Exchange (ROE) and any applicable trade agreements. 

Step 4: Risk Assessments and Inspections 

Not every shipment is inspected. Customs uses risk assessment systems to identify cargo that may require additional checks. If selected, officials verify that the shipment matches the documentation and complies with regulations. An inspection is a normal part of the customs process and doesn’t necessarily indicate a problem. 

Step 5: Clearance Is Granted 

Once documentation has been verified, duties settled and any inspections completed, customs release the shipment to continue to its final destination.
